YOU ME AT SIX – esce oggi ‘SUCKAPUNCH’, il nuovo esplosivo album della pluripremiata band inglese
Sette album dopo, You Me At Six sono più irrequieti che mai. Dopo un decennio passato tra le band più prolifiche ed amate della Gran Bretagna, il quintetto del Surrey dovrebbe avere ben poco da dimostrare. In realtà, è proprio il contrario. “We need to show people why we’re still here. Yes, we’re hungry for more success, but what matters now is how we achieve it. Where do we go that we haven’t been before? How do we challenge ourselves as well as our fans? What does it mean to be in this band?” afferma Josh Franceschi, frontman e cantante della band.
Negli ultimi anni You Me At Six hanno superato i propri limiti e lasciato i propri confini verso la sperimentazione, cambiando la propria pelle indie-rock in qualcosa di più dance, R&B ed hip-hop. Soprattutto, sono diventati i produttori di loro stessi e in ‘SUCKAPUNCH’ attraversano territori sonori finora sconosciuti, per un album esplosivo e pieno di sfumature sonore. “We’re setting our own agenda. At this stage, after all we’ve achieved, we know what we’re capable of. The aim was to blaze our own trail, not please other people.” (Max Helyer, chitarrista).
Sin dal primo brano, ‘Nice To Me’, dal groove sinuoso, riff rock ed una batteria glitch, per poi passare alla title- track, una bomba electro-rock, ‘SUCKAPUNCH’ esplode in una moltitudine di modi, dai testi pieni di anima sino a voci che possono essere arrabbiate ed intime nello stesso respiro. “Sonically, there was no blueprint. Every song has its own identity. Some are more recognisably You Me at Six, but with different elements. We did a lot of looking back to where we’d been before to work out where we could go. There’s no point repeating yourself. This is the sound of us changing lanes. The challenge was to excite ourselves and our fan base, but also change the minds of people who haven’t been into us before.” – Josh Franceschi.
La scrittura di ‘SUCKAPUNCH’ inizia qualche mese dopo la pubblicazione di ‘VI’ (2018, sesto album della band, Top 6 della UK Album Chart), a cui ha fatto seguito un lungo tour con numerose date esaurite, comprese tre notti alla Brixton Academy, ed altrettanti live in molti festival estivi. La band, tra un live e l’altro, prosegue il proprio processo di sperimentazione, seguiti dal produttore Dan Austin, al lavoro anche nel nuovo disco. Da queste session nasce il brano ‘What’s It Like’, un mash-up rumorosamente rock, con synth ed accenni hip-hop. Il singolo apre la strada a ‘SUCKAPUNCH’: nei mesi successivi YMA6, mentre sono in tour in Canada e negli States, compongono un’altra dozzina di brani, per poi volare in Thailandia per le registrazioni.
“We do so much of the production ourselves now that we had some songs with 40 or 50 versions, plus others that were just loops or a jumble of ideas. I remember the label asking if we were ready to start recording, but the intention was always to go to Thailand with the book left wide open and see what happens.” afferma il batterista Dan Flint.
Il legame tra i membri della band, testato in passato, non era mai stato così forte. Idem la loro relazione con Dan Austin, che è diventato il sesto membro non ufficiale di You Me at Six. “To manifest something powerful and profound, you need everyone on board. We knew Dan well from making VI so we were instantly on the same page. I’ve never felt the freedom while recording that I do with him. Anything goes. If we said we wanna drive at 100mph into a brick wall, Dan would say ‘Cool, let’s buckle up. And here’s the microphone we should use to record that’. The level of trust between us is limitless.” Josh Franceschi.
Registrato in cinque settimane al Karma Sound Studio di Bang Saray (Thailandia) e prodotto dal collaboratore di lunga data Dan Austin (Biffy Clyro, Massive Attack, Pixies), ‘SUCKAPUNCH’ è un disco ambizioso, frutto dello studio di numerosissimi demo che la band ha scritto nei due anni trascorsi in tour dalla pubblicazione di ‘VI’. Musicalmente il disco spazia dall’elettronica all’hip-hop, dal rock puro e crudo alla R&B e rappresenta il lavoro più personale e sperimentale di You Me At Six, naturale conseguenza del percorso artistico e di ricerca della band.
